Some Facts About Plastic Recycling

Plastics have exceptional strength, structural design, and excellent recyclability. There are plastics that can be recycled and some that cannot be recycled. Plastic waste can be processed into useful products such as bags, microwave oven equipment, chairs, tables, decorations, furniture, medical equipment, and others. You can easily purchase reused plastic material from an online store.

Plastics are made of polymers, which include:

  • Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), is used for beverage containers such as water bottles, soft drinks, and salad dressings, and in the clothing industry.

  • High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is used in contact with food such as milk bottles, juice bottles, and organic solvent bottles. It can also be used for trash bags.

  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), is used in homes to make linoleum on floors, vinyl car countertops, raincoats, shower curtains, and water pipes.

  • Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is used for packaging e.g. films, trays, bags for frozen food, and/or plastic bags and squeeze bottles for food and non-food use. It can also be used as a protective layer for paper, textiles, and other plastics.

  • Polypropylene (PP) for microwave ovens, margarine baths, and disposable cups and plates. It can also be used for ropes, carpets, and thermal products.

  • Polystyrene (PS) or styrofoam for egg cartons, disposable plates, and tableware and for the safe transport of fragile products. Can also be used as a packaging material to store hot or cold drinks from a glass.

Plastics are categorized by their resin identification code, which identifies the polymer. By consistently identifying codes for polymer types, recyclers can easily classify plastics based on the type of resin. Plastic recycling has different routes and applications. This code states that plastic recycling is economically feasible.
